“So many questions feel like they infantilise us: ‘Do you live together? ’ No, we f**king do not,” says Sara, the younger by eight minutes.

But after so long in the public eye, they’re understandably frustrated with being asked the same things about life as identical twins.

On their fifth album THE CON, the 26-year old Canadian twins use an intricately varied sonic backdrop (provided by Death Cab for Cutie producer Chris Walla) to express the chaotic thoughts—mostly having to do with the angst of relationships—shooting around their heads.

Raised in Calagary, Alberta, Tegan and Sara have been making music since forming a “garage duo” when they were fifteen years-old.Molly: Did you see the episode where they were swimming with the pigs? When I was watching "The Women Tell All" [the late-season episode in which eliminated contestants discuss their experiences] the other night, I was thinking “they're embarrassed”, but they're also totally excited to get another moment to be there to talk about themselves. Tegan: At first I really liked Jamie, and I also really like Jubilee. Sara: The episode where they kick [Olivia] off, where [ Ben] dumps her. OK, she's friendlier, but it doesn't mean anything but that she has lowered expectations. They were both kind of funny, and they had attitude. There's the storm, and her face is just so dewy and wet. Sara: When they zoom away they make it look as if she's literally been left on the island alone, and they just get further and further away. Where they keep going further and further until they get to the International Space Station and you know that that girl is still on that island? With the twins, did you ever think, “That's not fair to reduce them to being a unit”? They gallantly offer to say their name each time they speak for the benefit of my dictaphone but it’s not necessary.They’ve come to accept that in any interview only a certain percentage of the conversation is going to be about their songs and the rest will be about their identity: as women in music, as twin sisters in music, as gay twin sisters in music. If I were just straight as a musician, maybe I wouldn’t feel as though my life has as much meaning.As the seasons pass, everyone gets more jaded; perversely, though, their dreams of fame are coming true via itself. " Tegan: I can't remember the last time I was somewhere where there was meatloaf. It's actually really impressive for how much they spent on it. Sara: I'm shocked that one of the twins made it as far as she did. You get one sweet item, one salty item, and a beverage. If they don't have the Ruffles, I don't mind a Lay's. And so the cast is now trapped forever at SUR restaurant, like ghosts at a haunted mansion, even though none of them really work there as waiters anymore because they have become what every waiter dreams of: reality TV stars. Molly: They shot it at the North Hollywood library! At first you watch and you're like, "These people are so pathetic, I'm so much better than them." Then you are suddenly realizing, "Wait, these people are so pathetic and we're really not so different after all." Sara: No, we're not. Tegan: The fact that they always just wrote "Twin" under the twins is so funny. Sara: I would get just regular Perrier, no flavor water. If I were in Canada, we'd be talking a whole different ballgame – my chip of choice is Old Dutch rippled sour cream and onion. Same-sex marriage increasingly has Americans on its side, with overwhelming support among young people.Although the Quins hail from Canada, where same-sex marriage has been legal since 2005, they both live in the States--meaning they have a stake in, and an opinion on, the two potentially landmark cases currently facing the Supreme Court. Sara is a New York resident, where gay marriage is legal, but Tegan lives in Los Angeles, where for the moment at least, it's not.Tegan’s face is slightly squarer, and she has a mark where she used to have a piercing below her lip.Sara’s speaking voice is a little higher, her looks more pixieish.“I just want back in your head,” goes the chorus of the first single.“I want to draw you a floorplan of my head and heart,” begins the song “Floorplan.”Buzzing guitars, plinking pianos, and skittish drum beats—both real and electronic—help to convey the hopes, fears and anxieties that come from trying to connect through love.--are still every bit the outspoken activists they've been for most of their 13-year career.That outspokenness includes the currently front-burner issue of marriage equality.
